Top Ten Cameras of August

The top three positions in Top 10 charts have remained unchanged for August with two new entries to the list. Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-LX3 and Fujifilm’s FinePix are making their debut in the rankings, while Olympus’ shooters have slipped off the top 10 positions. Among the 10 shooters, Sony’s Cyber-Shot DSC-T300 is the only touchscreen model. Are consumers still more comfortable with physical buttons, or are they waiting for the new touchscreen units announced recently? We foresee new entries in the charts when the latest shooters start to go on sale.

This is Top 10 Cameras of August :

1. Fujifilm FinePix F100fd
Fujifilm FinePix F100fdUltra-high ISO sensitivity of 12,800; wide dynamic range; intuitive face detection; short shutter lag; 5x optical zoom with 28mm wide-angle lens; good image quality. Relatively heavy; awkward positioning of flash, easily covered by fingers; lacks full manual control. Despite an awkwardly positioned flash unit, the F100fd didn’t disappoint with its enhanced feature set and excellent image quality.

2. Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS
Canon Digital IXUS 860 ISImpressive performance and image quality; optical image stabilization; face detection. No manual exposure controls; no optical viewfinder. While the Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS doesn’t have an optical viewfinder or manual exposure controls, it captures beautiful images with its wide, 3.8x optical zoom lens and ranks among the top compact cameras we’ve seen.

3. Canon Digital IXUS 80 IS
Canon Digital IXUS 80 ISGreat image quality; minimal shutter lag; speedy performance; optical image stabilization; face detection; optical viewfinder. No manual exposure controls; slow flash recycle time. Canon’s IXUS 80 IS adds optical image stabilization to last year’s hit IXUS 70, while delivering just as impressive image quality.

4. Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3
Panasonic Lumix DMC LX3High-resolution multi aspect ratio image capture; F2.0 optics; highly customizable modes which can be saved; large sensor delivers impressive image quality. Unable to capture full-resolution images in 16:9 format; use of lens cap may be an issue to some; bundled RAW image-processing software not up to the job. The LX3 is a good camera with an excellent feature set that positions it way beyond any conventional point-and-shoot on the retail shelves today.

5. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T300
Sony Cyber-shot DSC T300Fast performance; tons of handy image editing and playback features; zoom rocker is in a much more comfortable position. Soft, noisy photos. A great design, fast shooting, and lots of features can’t overcome the fact that the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T300 simply doesn’t take very good pictures.

6. Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX36
Panasonic Lumix DMC FX3625mm wide-angle lens; HD-quality video recording; elegant design; maximum ISO of 6,400. Slightly soft images; focusing a tad slow. A worthy successor to the FX33, the FX36 is a compact powerhouse capable of delivering decent-quality pictures and HD videos.

7. Samsung NV24HD
Samsung NV24HD24mm ultra-wide-angle lens; HD-video recording; stylish design. 3.6x zoom only; no battery charger supplied; proprietary port for charging and data transfer. The NV24HD is a stunning camera, but the performance is only typical of the usual point-and-shoot.

8. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W170
Sony Cyber-shot DSC W170Good user interface; lots of options; impressive burst mode stamina. Frustrating zoom rocker switch; cluttered controls; proprietary Memory Stick format. Plain Jane styling and cluttered controls belie a wonderfully intuitive graphical user interface and some clever features. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W170 is a surprisingly adaptable camera that can be tweaked to take decent pictures in various environments.

9. Fujifilm FinePix F60fd
Fujifilm FinePix F60fdSolid build; large display; scene recognition with Face Detection 3.0; dual memory card slot. Lacks scroll wheel; focusing can be a tad slow; aperture-/ shutter-priority mode not as intuitive as it should be; poor high ISO image quality. The F60fd is a capable shooter but its less-than-desired image quality did not go down well with us.

10. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T70
Sony Cyber-shot DSC T70Dimensions : 90 x 56.4 x 20.7 mm
Weight : 128 g
Sensor Resolution (effective) : 8.1 megapixels
