Backup and Recover your PC via Thumbdrive

You’ve probably seen many applications out there that let you mirror your entire hard drive so you can use the secondary drive to recover your system in the event of a hard drive failure. CMS’ upcoming software solution, the BounceBack Mobile, takes this idea one step further by letting you do so with a flash drive.

Obviously, the capacity on most flash drives are too small to backup most hard drives, so a filtering feature is included to let you select the files to mirror. But the recovery function remains, that is you can use the flash drive to boot up your system if your hard drive fails.

The BounceBack Mobile app will launch in the latter part of Q1 2010. According to the company representative at the Digital Experience event preceding CES, the app will initially come bundled in a flash drive (16GB, 32GB or 64GB capacities) before it is sold as an application on its own.

Samsung’s MP3 Player offers Transparent Touchscreen Display

Transparent is still in apparently, with the company taking a leaf out of the books of two certain Korean and Japanese rivals’ see-through phones, and showing off a digital music player in similar vein.

The IceTouch YP-H1 from Samsung is a 16GB flash-based MP3 player that combines a unique 2-inch transparent AMOLED touchscreen with its proprietary TouchWiz Sweep interface for navigation.

File support extends to MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, AAC, M4A, WAV, and MP3HD. The player can also view pictures, playback videos with support for MPEG-4, WMV, H.264, Xvid, and DivX, and double as storage device. There’s 5.1-channel sound enhancement technology onboard and generous battery life as the screen claims to sip power sparingly.

Samsung NX10, Hybrid Camera

Not long after Panasonic and Olympus jointly announced the Micro Four Thirds format in 2008, Samsung was quick to unveil plans for a hybrid system which employed a similar standard that did away with the mirror component in an interchangeable lens camera.The Korean chaebol then sprung a surprise at PMA 2009 by showing a prototype of this hybrid shooter under the new NX series.

Today, Samsung is announcing the NX10, a hybrid camera which is set to go against the likes of the GH1 and E-P2. We had a quick hands-on with a working prototype and here’s what we think.

The NX10’s design doesn’t differ from the looks of the model shown earlier at PMA 2009. It looks more like the GH1 with a small handgrip and a faux prism hump which houses the electronic viewfinder (EVF). The dSLR-like aesthetics may not appeal at first glance, but if you compare it to the E-P2 like we did, you’d realize the NX10 isn’t much larger. In fact, if you shave off the handgrip, the Samsung shooter is just about as thick as the Olympus.

Yotaro, Baby-bot Teaches Parenting Skills

Created in the Uchiyama Lab at Japan’s University of Tsukuba, Yotaro is meant to be a baby simulator for teaching new parents and about-to-be-older-siblings the ways of babyhood. As crying is obviously a big part of infancy, warm water comes out of a small opening in the interactive screen that doubles as Yotaro’s touch-sensitive face.

Yotaro, just a concept for now, is not a standalone robot, as a rather extensive set of devices must be attached for it to perform its baby-like functions.

The computer controlling Yotaro’s changing facial expressions is external, the water that serves as the tired-baby tears is stored in a separate tank, and sensors direct Yotaro’s “emotional” responses (tickling Yotaro’s belly, for example, results in it wiggling its motorized legs under the blanket). A projector under the bed projects the appropriate countenance upward onto Yotaro’s 2D face, while a speaker offers up the right baby sounds.
